I like Keith Olbermann, but I can recognize how over-the-top he is. He’s not quite as unpleasantly antagonistic towards the right as Bill Maher, but he sometimes comes close.
Ben Affleck did a pretty good skewering of him last night on SNL, culminating in an absolutely brilliant “Special Comment” in defense of… “Miss Precious Perfect.” Watch…
Now, I just wish they’d post the Giraffes video by the Staten Island Technical High School A/V club.

I thought the Countdown piece was a little long, but I enjoyed his take on Olberman a lot. Really funny, especially the “Worst Person” bit.
I have to say, I was annoyed to have to see McCain twice, and was actually surprised to hear some booing from the audience. I didn’t watch the Palin one, but I had the impression that they tried to keep their audience civil when they had controversial guests. Having been an audience member at both the Daily Show and the Colbert Report when they had less-than-popular guests, it seemed like the audience kept their opinions in check and were respectful of the show.
That being said, I quite enjoyed Affleck’s monologue.
I actually just tuned into the show in the middle of the Countdown sketch. I didn’t watch the entire thing in this clip either — yeah, a bit too long — but I loved the “Worst Person” and “Special Comment” at the end. (Affleck’s impersonation was suitably over-the-top and well written, with Olbermann’s characteristic stilted sentence structure, but his voice and tone were not really that accurate.)
So needless to say I did not see McCain’s first appearance, just the Weekend Update, which I actually found surprisingly funny. He has pretty good comic delivery. Not as good as Al Gore (who, I thought, could almost have joined the cast full-time after his appearance), but still, pretty good. I kind of got the feeling though that he knows the race is over. Now he’s just running out the clock. (But wait, doesn’t the winner usually do that?)
McCain has always been good on SNL or The Daily Show, primarily because he gets the idea of humor. Palin obviously takes herself too seriously to really participate in stuff like that (or she’s too worried that she’ll look as dumb as she is), but McCain has been great. If you haven’t seen it, watch the cold open from last night. McCain on QVC with Cindy showing off their jewelry set. Pretty damn hilarious.
I just watched the QVC bit… funny! It always goes a long way for me when these crotchety-seeming Republicans show up on SNL and loosen up a bit. It worked for Bob Dole and Steve Forbes too. I still quote the bit where Forbes was on Nightline talking about his tell-all book in which the names had been (poorly) altered. At one point Darrell Hammond’s Ted Koppel quotes a portion of the book that refers to a “Grenator Bole.” Koppel: “I don’t know why the author felt he had to disguise the word ‘Senator’.”
Teve Torbes! I also love the one where he’s some sort of worker sitting on a roof, with long hair and a sleeveless shirt. Ha!
Precisely… those two skits have embedded themselves permanently in my brain!
