A special comment from Keith Olbermann that everyone should hear

I know a fair number of liberals who reject Keith Olbermann for his blowhard tone (reminiscent of Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.) despite the fact that they might agree with his stance on the issues. But even if you find Olbermann objectionable (for whatever reason), you should hear what he has to say about California’s dreadful passage of Proposition 8.

I’m with him, specifically in respect to how he can simply not understand why people are against allowing others to show their love. It’s impossible to understand how people who worship someone who gave his life for those who hated him cannot see the hypocrisy in their words and actions when they condemn the lives of others. It just numbs the mind.

But we know the truth; people use fear to control others. This is the basis of Jewish and Christian religion. The rules were created by community elders to keep the people safe and in line… but the penalty for breaking these laws had to be so strong that the living truly feared a sinful death. Lewis Black has a great bit about this idea, which boils down to the idea that people were SO stupid back in the old days that a “god” had to tell them not to eat spoiled meat and marry camels.

Frankly, we as a species have moved beyond this idea of story-as-law. Stories still serve many purposes, but we have too much information about the world for a 2,000-year-old story to be seen as literal truth.

The only thing people who hate gay marriage fear more than Hell is the idea that they are no longer in control. Opposition to human rights is ALWAYS about a fear of losing control, whether it’s genocide in Asia or voting down someone’s rights in California.
