I was very fortunate to first learn of this piece while seeing it performed (on piano.) It was just casually slipped into a program of other Cage works, and it was in a very small room, a really intimate performance. Best of all, I had absolutely no idea what I was getting into. I suspect that's a rare treat, and of course you only get one chance to experience something like that. And I really didn't appreciate it as much at the time. I really didn't think much of Cage, but this piece did strike me as a bit clever, to say the least. However, I know that experience has had an impact on me as an artist ever since. It just puts one's own work in perspective. That piece is just about as outside of the musical box as you can get. And it's just pure genius.
